Whether aided by wind or an Act of God, damage to your home caused by a flood is not covered. Watch this video to learn what you can do to protect your home and the insurance options available to you.

If you run a business out of your home, you should take note that your homeowners, condominium or tenants policy does not automatically protect your business. In most cases, it does not. In fact, unless your insurance company is aware of your home-based business, you may even void your home policy. It’s critically important to make sure that you have the insurance coverage you need.  Home Based Businesses are no exception.  Most home based businesses can be insured by adding an extension to your existing policy that are not expensive.

Today when people plan a weekend or vacation at the family cottage, it is much different. Simple summer getaway locations have turned into second homes with fully winterized properties with modern kitchens, state-of-the-art appliances, big screen TV’s with satellite dishes, hot tubs, and more. It’s critically important to make sure that you have the insurance coverage you need.

Each year, there are thousands of household clothes dryer fires that cause death and injuries and result in millions of dollars in damage. In some cases, faulty appliances are to blame, but most fires can be prevented with proper dryer cleaning and venting maintenance. Watch this video to learn what you can do to prevent fires in your clothes dryer.

Home insurance provides personally liability coverage for bodily injury and property damage to other people.
However, the standard personal property insurance policy (homeowners, tenants or condo) does not extend liability coverage
to any types of business use of the property including home daycare businesses.  Occasionally, babysitting in your home
is not considered a business, but when it becomes a day care business (defined as regularly caring for children on a regular
schedule while receiving financial compensation), personal liability coverage would not apply.

With spring arriving many people will start thinking about moving. Something that very few think about is how their choice will affect their ability to get property insurance and how much they will pay for insurance.

There’s no question that working smoke detectors save lives.
Statistics from the Ontario Fire Marshall’s office indicate that in
about 50% of fatal home fires, the victims had no smoke alarm
warning.

Some people prey on homes when they know the owners are out of town or on vacation. There are certain steps you need to take before leaving to make the house look like someone is there at all times. Like the old saying goes, “If there is bait, the fish will grab.? You can relate this saying to the way burglars think. Don’t leave out any bait that would tempt a burglar. What is the bait that burglars look for? There are several things the burglars pay close attention to at your home. Daily newspapers piling up in the driveway, a continuous dark house, and no cars in the driveway are just a few things that they look for. Your job is to make sure you put a plan of action into place before leaving your house.

It’s one of those things that home-based business owners often never think about. Many home-based business owners assume that their home insurance policy also covers their business activities. The fact is the standard home insurance policy does not cover most home businesses. In addition to this, your home based business activities can void all coverage provided under your home insurance policy.
